Frequently Asked Questions
Good questions deserve real answers.
The questions we hear most often, answered plainly. Still don't see what you're looking for? Give us a call at (732) 572-3226 — we'd rather answer your actual question than guess at it.
Getting Started
Are you accepting new patients?
Yes! We regularly welcome new patients of all ages. Call (732) 572-3226 or email office@drkreitman.com and we will find a time that works — often within a week or two.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring a photo ID, your dental insurance card (if applicable), a list of any medications you take, and any prior x-rays or dental records you have access to. If you have dental anxiety or specific concerns, feel free to share those ahead of time by phone or email — it helps us prepare to take extra care with you.
What happens on a first visit?
Your initial visit typically includes a review of your medical and dental history, a comprehensive exam, any necessary digital x-rays, and a conversation with Dr. Kreitman about your concerns and what you want to get out of your dental care. Depending on your specific needs, a dental cleaning may be performed by our highly trained dental hygienist at your initial visit or it might be scheduled for a second. You will leave knowing exactly what (if anything) we are recommending and why.
How do I prepare for my first appointment?
Please arrive about 15 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork — or you can download our forms ahead of time from the New Patients page. If you take antibiotics before dental work for a medical reason (for example, certain heart or orthopedic conditions), be sure to take them one hour prior to your appointment as prescribed. Please let us know if you need a refill of your prescription.
Insurance & Billing
Do you accept my insurance?
We work with most major PPO dental insurance plans as an out-of-network provider. As a courtesy we will file the claims to your insurance provider on your behalf. Please call or email us with your insurance details before your first visit and we will verify your specific coverage and any out-of-pocket estimate.
How does billing work?
At check-in we verify your insurance and collect any expected patient portion (copays, deductibles). After your visit, we file the insurance claim on your behalf. Any balance remaining after insurance is processed is billed to you; if there is an overpayment, we refund it promptly. We aim for zero surprises — if you ever have a question about a charge, call us.
What if I don’t have dental insurance?
We are happy to see patients without insurance and will be transparent about cost up front, before any treatment. Many procedures are more affordable than patients expect, and for larger treatment plans we can help coordinate third-party financing (such as CareCredit) for patients who want to spread payments over time.
Will you give me a cost estimate before treatment?
Yes, always — for anything beyond routine preventive care. We explain what is recommended, what your insurance is estimated to cover, and what your out-of-pocket portion would be. You are never pressured to commit to anything in the chair.
Routine Care
How often should I have a cleaning and checkup?
For most adults with healthy teeth and gums, every six months is the right rhythm. Patients with a history of periodontal disease, frequent cavities, or other risk factors often benefit from every three or four months. We tailor the recommendation to you, not a generic schedule.
I haven’t been to a dentist in years. Is that a problem?
Not for us. A lot of our favorite new patients start that sentence exactly that way. We will take a thorough look, talk through what we see without judgment, and build a plan around what matters most to you.
Do you treat patients of all ages?
Yes — we treat patients of all ages, from 2 to 102! We care for the whole family.
The Visit Experience
What if I have dental anxiety?
Tell us — truly. We go slower, explain more, stop whenever you need a break, and offer comforts like noise-cancelling headphones, blankets, and pillows that many patients find genuinely helpful. Many of our most loyal patients started out terrified of the dental chair.
Do you offer emergency appointments?
Yes. If you’re an established patient experiencing a dental emergency — severe pain, a broken tooth, trauma, or an infection — please call the office immediately at (732) 572-3226. We reserve time in our schedule for urgent needs and will see you as quickly as possible.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for at least 48 hours’ notice when possible so we can offer the slot to another patient. Life happens — if something comes up last-minute, just call us. We’re reasonable. Repeated no-shows or last-minute cancellations may result in a fee.
How long do appointments take?
It depends on what we’re doing. A typical cleaning and exam runs 45–60 minutes. Fillings usually 30–60 minutes. Crowns and more involved procedures may run 1–2 hours. We’ll always tell you the expected time when you book.
Your Health & Safety
What are your infection control protocols?
We follow the infection control standards of OSHA, the CDC, and the EPA without exception. Most supplies are single-use. Reusable instruments are sterilized in our autoclave to the current standard of care. Operatory surfaces are disinfected between every patient. All team members wear appropriate PPE and follow rigorous hand-hygiene protocols.
Are digital x-rays safe?
Yes. We use Schick by Sirona digital radiography, which uses a small fraction of the radiation of traditional film x-rays. We take x-rays only when clinically indicated — not reflexively — and we use leaded protective aprons and thyroid collars as standard practice.
